Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro on 7 October 1918. After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, he moved to Rome in 1945, where, after figurative beginnings, he developed an abstract-geometric style.
After settling in Milan, in the 1980s he started the Blanks series, in which he covered the posters with monochrome sheets, and from 1984 he started painting again, producing the Cinecittà 2 cycle of works and later the Sovrapitture, in which he intervened pictorially on advertising posters. He exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1990 and at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1994. In 2000, the Mimmo Rotella Foundation was founded with the aim of promoting contemporary art and preserving the artist's work. He died in Milan on 8 January 2006.
