Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 in Volos, Greece. Very young he took a drawing course at the Athens Polytechnic School, then, from 1906 to 1908, studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Beginning in 1910, readings of Nietzsche prompted him to produce his first self-portraits and metaphysical landscapes.
