He is one of the most important members of the Italian Transavantgarde movement (also known in Europe as Neo-expressionism), together with Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino, Nicola De Maria and Enzo Cucchi. The movement founded by the critic Achille Bonito Oliva had its peak in the eighties, and then gradually declined. Chia currently lives and works between New York and Montalcino near Siena. He has exhibited at the Paris Biennial, the Sao Paulo Biennial and in various editions of the Venice Biennial.
Sandro Chia has a very heterogeneous artistic training behind him. In 1969 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he came into contact with the main European and later American neo-avant-gardes; he moved to Rome for a decade and then to New York for about twenty years. At the end of the seventies, after various travel experiences in Asia and Europe, he will convert to figurativism and will naturally and automatically insert himself in the Transavantgarde.
His works can be found in major international museums, such as MoMa (New York), Tate Gallery (London), Fukujama (Japan), Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Israel), Neue National Gallerie (Berlin).
