Born in Genoa in 1950, Francesco Musante graduated first from the Liceo Artistico in the Ligurian capital and then from the Albertina branch of Fine Arts in Turin.
His first artistic experiments date back to 1967: mostly abstract research on large color backgrounds. The following year he began exhibiting his works in group exhibitions, painting competitions and awards.
The works of the years 69-70 are influenced by Pop Art and Rauschenberg's Combine Paintings: clear references to America through the use of lettering and the inclusion of objects and woods.
Beginning in 1971 Musante decided to be a full-time artist.
1975 saw a change in direction: Musante turned to figurative painting, initially creating a series of female figures inspired by Klimt and the Viennese Secession. This is a theme he will dissect over the course of ten years, using a variety of techniques-from watercolor, oil, collage, and etching-and a variety of media-canvas, wood, ceramic, plate, paper.
Gradually he also begins work with graphics and watercolors where the first narrative and fantastic cues that distinguish his work from 1985 to the present day can be glimpsed: his "little men" appear that seem to have come out of a storybook and placed in contexts full of objects, characters and words. Musante's paintings finally break out of dramatic atmospheres and lighten up.
In Francesco Musante's works, the funny protagonists float in surreal atmospheres, in which the visual experience is flanked by poetic phrases that sometimes evoke characters such as Fabrizio de Andrè, Pablo Neruda and Hans Christian Andersen, famous for their romantic character compositions. Artist Musante's silkscreens and unique works are often embellished with polymateric details, collage, and glitter, and are made in numerous formats. Among the latter, the most popular is the 8x10 cm silkscreen, a precious paper depicting a specific subject for example the Lucky Door.
Musante's works are in wide demand by private and institutional audiences, so his medium to high quotations are stable.
